{Step-by-Step} Basic Copic Blending

Have you seen colored stamped images that made you ask, "Wow, how did they do that?" Most likely the designer used Copic markers to color in their stamped images. Shelly here with some basic tips on how to color using Copic markers. It is important to practice this technique several times until you are feeling confident about your capabilities and then try it on your final stamped image. Here we go...

1. Choose your stamp. I look for open designs to use with Copic markers. Paper Smooches works great!

I am going to choose the worm along with the "Worm birthday wishes" stamped greeting for my image.

2. Next, select your Copic marker colors. Choose colors from the same family to create a nice blended look. I am going to use E31, E33, and E35 to color the main part of the worm's body. These are earth tones (E) containing the same intensity level "3" (Center #) and they step up in brightness (last #, here it is 1, 3, 5. 1 is the lightest color).

3. Make sure you've chosen the correct type of paper to stamp your images on using Momento or Distress Ink. This is important when creating good images that won't smear or bleed.

4. I am using E31 first and coloring left to right using a circular motion. I am using the brush tip, bending it at the tip. Keep the outer edges wet to avoid streaks.

5. While this first color (base color) is still wet, add E33 to the left side. Lift up at the end of each stroke, leaving more ink on the left side and less on the right to create a shadow.

6. Using the E31 Copic again, go back over the top of the E33 color using circular strokes again, mixing the two colors together and hopefully removing any rough edges.

7. If necessary repeat steps 4-6 until your blended colors are even and there is no streaking or rough edges.

8. Adding the third color. Using the same technique as in #5 above, add # 35 on the left side of the image and lift up at the end of the stroke. Go back over the image with E33 to mix these two colors. Finish off the image with E31 all over the image.

{Sketch Card Challenge}

I used Copic markers to color the naked Prima flowers, flower centers are Authentique Splendid Chipboard die cut pieces as are the border strip, upper and lower embellishment pieces. Post your take on the sketch on the AWDML blog and put yourself in a drawing from AWDML!

"We are so excited to announce that we are looking for 4 designers for our March 2012 – August 2012 team!! The call is open from January 20th through February 10th. We will be announcing the new design team on our blog and newsletter on February 15th.

So WHO are we looking for?

We are looking for inspiring designers who are creative, ambitious and who can design with our products from the store. We are looking for designers who can display the following:

- Open communication skills
- Unique individual style
- Individuals that can display flexibility, teamwork and cooperation
- Ability to display and teach different techniques
- Ability to create layouts from a basic to a more advanced skill level
- Creativity in the use of our products to help promote A Walk Down Memory Lane
- Ability to teach online classes and write up instructions, video tutorials are a plus!
- Must be able to work within deadlines and under pressure
- Copic Certified designer is a plus

What do I need to Apply?

1) We would like you to submit Three (3) original layouts and one paper craft project that best represent you and your style. Acceptable paper craft projects would be altered items, cards, mini albums, etc. All submitted items must be your own design (they don’t have to be made specifically for this call) and e-mailed to DesignTeamCall@awalkdownmemorylane.net

2) Active participation on message boards and in galleries is important and will be considered when we chose our team. You will also be required to have an active blog

Now for the Nitty Gritty...What you’ll do as a DT member:

1) Your DT term would be from March 2012 – August 2012 .
2) Each month you must, create, at minimum 4 layouts & 1-2 papercraft projects. Your work must be sent in via email by the 25th of each month. You will be responsible for ordering your own products from the store and making sure that you have enough time to get your assignments done for your deadlines.
3) Post your DT layouts on galleries and blogs throughout the web, whenever possible, link to AWDML. Watch other promotion Message Boards and Blogs for product chats and talk us up where possible.
4) Participate in Facebook and blog discussions on a regular basis and keep the Facebook page going by regularly posting new topics, games, challenges, tips & tricks, project examples, etc.
5) Newsletter participation is a must, you must sign up monthly for at least two newsletter articles per month (product highlight, small project with instructions, sketches, etc)
6) You must have a “scrapblog” or a blog that you talk about scrapping on and update it regularly each week with a post about projects you’ve used from the store, featured manufacturer, or whatever. We ask that you also have links to our site and your DT blinkie on your blog and other sites where allowable.
7) Be the eyes and ears for AWDML online, finding new inspiration or ideas and sharing them to help our community grow.
8) Each DT member will be required to post to the AWDML DT blog once per week. You will also be required to post a class and a challenge once a month. We will have a rotating schedule so you don’t have to do BOTH in one week.
9) You will be responsible for weekly posts on our Facebook page
10) You must sign and return the AWDML DT contract before your DT term begins.

{Manufacturer Spotlight} Paper Smooches

It's time for AWDML's {Manufacturer Spotlight} Paper Smooches. Paper Smooches is an acrylic stamp manufacturer. Kim Hughes is the face behind Paper Smooches. Previous to "Paper Smooches" Kim illustrated for Cornish Heritage Farms, and she has over 900 project published in magazines and idea books so you most likely recognize her name.

You should think of “Paper Smooches” as using ink to smooch your paper with clear stamps! Paper Smooches stamps are made in the USA, from high quality photopolymer. I found them to make beautiful images the first time I tried them. I enjoy the "cute" designs and silly sayings and the openness of the stamp designs lends itself to COPIC MARKERS wonderfully. I am always looking for those types of stamps so you can imagine how happy I was to find Paper Smooches!

What really grabbed my attention were these title sayings that work great on cards or as titles for layouts. If I can use a stamp on both cards and layouts I am totally SOLD!!

{Tip} Choosing Springy Copic colors

Spring and Easter are right around the corner, chances are your cards are going to reflect the season change. Get ready now by making sure your Copic collection has bright Spring colors from the YG, RV & Y color families.

Remember to pick at least two colors from each color family, pick a shade lighter than you think you may need. It's easy to add more color; but hard to take it away!

For blossoms, you may want to pick colors from the RV or Y color families.

Here's a quick refresher on the Copic marker labeling system:

I'll use RV 32 as an example. RV represents the color family "red/violet", the "3" is the intensity level so the partner for RV32 will also start with RV3_. The final number in the label, the "2" is the brightness level. I'll choose RV34 as the partner for my RV32.

I am using YG63, YG67, RV32, RV34, Y02, Y04, and Y08 on my stamped Paper Smooches images below. Paper Smooches acrylic stamp company has great images to use with Copic makers because of the open stamp designs.

{Tutorial} Coffee Filter Custom Dyed Flowers

Shelly here with an EZ inky tutorial: Create dimensional custom dyed flowers using regular coffee filters, dye ink, and Perfect Pearls in just a few easy steps.

1. Gather your supplies: You will need four coffee filters, dye ink like Ranger Distress Ink, a small sprayer like the Ranger mini-mister, and Ranger Perfect Pearls as well as scissors, a heart shape to use as a template OR a die like Sizzix Flowers, 3-D #2, a heat tool, brad for flower center.

2. Stack all four coffee filters together and fold into quarters.

3. Place heart shaped template over filter and cut around shape or die cut the four coffee filters in Vagabond (all at once) with Sizzix die:

4. Set the filters aside for a moment while you create your custom dye!

5. Collect your Perfect Pearls, Dye Ink and Ranger mini-mister. I choose colors to match my Authentique papers used on the "Hello" card pictured above.

6. Open the Mini-mister and add one dropper of dye ink into the container.

7. Open the Perfect pearls container and add a smidge of Perfect Pearls. I use a tiny plastic spoon for this.

8. Fill the rest of the Mini-Mister container with water, place the sprayer top on the container and shake, shake, shake. (Usually at this point I label the mini-mister with the dye ink color name for future reference).

9. Set the cut coffee filters out individually on a surface that you can spray onto with out harming the counter. I use my Ranger non-stick craft sheet. Spray the filters with the mini-mister dye solution until they are saturated.

10. Use a paper towel to soak up and puddles.

11. Dry the filters with the heat tool. Once the filters are dry, stack the filters on top of each other and use a pin to place a hole through the center of all four filters. I punched a 5/8" paper circle as a "washer" for the brad to go through and placed the washer on top of the four filters and attached all with the brad.

12. Fluff flower by folder and pinching the filters up around the brad. Fluff and flatten or keep the flower as bigger if you prefer.

13. Use a glue dot on the underside of the flower to attach to the top of a card or layout.

Create smaller flowers using a die like the Sizzix Flowers, 3-D #2 like this one I used on a layout:

Create Masculine Cards easily with the newest line of papers, ribbons from American Crafts

Create wonderful masculine cards with the newest line of papers from American Crafts: Chap! The deep rich colors drew me in right away! The coordinating upscale ribbons is absolutely gorgeous. It's so hard to find masculine ribbon-I was thrilled when I walked into The Scrapbooking Studio last week and saw this line right away. Yeah!!

Don't forget to use the Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher to hold down the ribbons. Metal anything always adds a bit of masculinity to a card. The metal rimmed brads from Basic Grey do this as well as the embossed texture pictured below.

Add "guy" texture with Tim Holtz's embossing folders run through the Vagabond, ink the edges with Ranger distress Ink. Use stamps like Wendy Vecchi's Destination Art collection, Basic Grey brads used for hub caps on old car, and twine used on banner all come together to say,"This card is all for him".

I love this flannel look wide ribbon :) coupled with Tim Holtz's on the edge die, JustRite cling stamps and dimensional pop dots this card looks sophisticated!

Why not include checks, gift cards and a note when you create a masculine pocket card? Try fraying the ribbon's ends and tacking them down to card front with brads to give the card a more masculine feel. Don't forget to include some metal on your best guy's card! A key to your heart is just the thing to add dimension and interest. Attach it with twine.

Create this adorable pop-up heart using the Sizzix Hearts-a-Plenty, 3-D (Pop-Up) die available NOW at The Scrapbooking Studio

Step-by-Step Quickie: Die cut a large flower (or trace a large flower & fussy cut) and adhered it to the top flap of the tri-fold A2 size card (use a 12x12 strip of paper to do this). Second, cut a mat for the front of the card and adhere it to the card front. The tri-fold flap should come down over the mat/card front. Third, I used the 1/4" border strip from the bottom of the 12x12 Pebbles paper to create the belly band that holds the flap in place. Finally, I punched a scalloped heart (that I stamped & colored) and attached it along with several smaller punched hearts to the band. Ta-da! Adroable Valentine that will impress your friends. Don't forget to add your Pebbles heart-shaped self adhesive buttons for increased drama & WOW factor!

This 6x6 Valentine was created using Accucut dies, heart shaped punches and the Sizzix Hearts-a-Plenty, 3-D (Pop Up) die, stamps, ribbons,Tim Holtz label die with "Love" cut from center.

{Challenge} Create a layout using a song title or lyrics

Are you ready for a challenge? Shelly here with something to get your creative juices flowing: Create a layout using a song titles or song lyrics. They are both known for creating great inspiration when it comes to layout titles and layout journaling. I was surprised to find one of myfavorite song lyrics on a chipboard embellishment from Authentique. ("These are the days of miracle and wonder."-Paul Simon). I had to have it! The quote worked perfectly with the Authentique Blissful Felicity paper and some Black and Gold Iowa Hawkeye pictures I hadn't been able to find the right paper for until now. (It only took six years, but the wait was worth it).

Here's a closer look at the quote:

Authentique has created wonderful heavy weight cardstock printed papers. The papers & embellishments feel great in your hand & the Authentique line includes fun extras like the heavy weight chipboard icons and 6x6 Bundles of papers. I purchased one 12x12 printed paper and used three 6x6 printed papers from my bundle to create this layout. The bundle gave me TONS of choices for future layouts and cards.

Hint: Use a 1.5" Xyron "X" to adhere border strips to layout. It'll save you a lot of time. Use pop dot behind quote chipboard piece and a glue dot to hold coffee filter flower in place. Learn how to make custom matching coffee filter flowers like this one in an upcoming tutorial:

{Product Review} Sizzix Embossing Folders
Shelly here with a product review for Sizzix embossing folders. Sizzix embossing folders offer lots of options to your tool inventory. When creating layouts or cards I frequently want to add dimension while keeping my project relatively flat. During times like this I reach for embossing folders. I know that the textured impressions created with the folders offer the deepest and boldest textured look especially when I ink or paint over the embossed image. Take time today or some day soon to create a tribute layout to your favorite fur ball whether it's a cat, dog, horse, or any type of pet we just want to hear about it! LB has been a big part of our lives for over 14 years. My husband and I adopted him from a shelter near Baraboo, WI about a year after we were married. He chewed his way through a lot of shoes & "unmentionables" and eventually into our hearts as well. We named him "LB" because he came from the pound and "LB" is an abbreviation for the word pound. His age is showing now and we continue to celebrate every day he is in our lives.

One way to warm up the layout is by using felt as a photo mat as shown in the above photo. I've also added wooden buttons that I inked and added twine to for an added masculine feel.

Here are some of my co-worker's furry friends. This layout will be going up in our staff restroom. Since I work at an elementary school during the day we sometime need a break from the children. It's really fun to see & guess which pet belongs to which employee.

This will be a fun surprise for some folks at work.

I added some bling and dimension to the stars for additional interest. Bella Blvd.'s Tail Waggers & Cat Naps line of papers works great for these projects! Shelly here, with a "Thank You" card making tutorial. I was thrilled when my Stamping Scrapping acrylic stamp set arrived a few weeks ago in my AWDML order---and the best part was that the stamps were designed to work with Spellbinder Nestabilies die sets!! It makes creating cards & embellishments EASY. You'll be able to create several cards in a short amount of time using these tools.

But don't take my word for it-try it for yourself. Here's How:

1. Collect the following card making supplies to create 4-8 6x6" Thank-You's:

2-4 pieces 12x12 white cardstock (I used Bazzill)
3 pieces 12x12 of patterned paper (I used Bella Blvd. Christmas Wishes)
Spellbinder Nestabilities die set (or similar nested die set)
Stamping Scrapping acrylic stamp set (or similar stamp set to match nesting dies) and Ranger Archival Ink (or similar ink)
Embellishments: I used 12x12 Alpha & Bits sticker sheet from Bella Blvd. that matched the patterned paper I choose, a flower, pearls, etc.
Approximately 2 yrds. coordinating ribbon (from stash)
pop dots
glue dots
Cat eye inks (optional)
punches: borders & oval (2 smaller sizes)

2. Create cards by scoring & folding 12x12 in half. Cut each folded piece in half creating two 6x6 cards. Continue until all cards have been folded and cut.

3. Cut mats from pattern paper 5.75 x 5.75". Ink edges of card mats if desired, use border punches along bottom edge (if desired) and adhere to card top.

4. Cut second mats from patterned paper 4.75 x 4.75". I used a die for this; but they could also just be cut square. Ink edges if desired and adhere to top of 1st mat.

5. Adhere border strip (from sticker sheet or punch a border with a border punch from coordinating patterned paper) along lower edge of card front. Mine range from 3/4" up to 1 1/4".

6. Use Stamping Scrapping stamps with black ink (Archival works great) on smooth white cardstock, then die cut around the stamped images with Spellbinders die. I used Beaded Circle Stamping Scrapping stamps & Beaded Circle Spellbinder Nestabilities die on this project.

7. Layer die cut images with small pop dots to front of card. I did a center design, lower right and upper left design layout-you can do the same with yours or keep them

all the same. Whatever you like best!

8. Use flowers or circular stickers in the center of the smallest die cut image.

9. Stamp the "Thank You" greeting once for each card you are creating (so you'll need 4-8 images). Punch or die cut stamped greeting with small oval punch or similar size punch or die. Create mat for stamped greeting using a slightly large (but same shape) punch or die and adhere the stamped image to the mat.

10. Adhere the entire greeting to the front of the card using pop dots if desired.

11. Add ribbons: choose to either tie ribbon around top of card near fold and knot, tie ribbon in a bow and use glue dots to adhere to card front, or tie ribbon in a small bow and leave ends long and ripple along the card front holding in place with glue dots (as shown below).

Ink: Ranger Archival Ink, Clearsnap Cat Eye Ink

{Day 11} The 12 Days of Christmas at AWDML

Day 11 of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” Sale at AWDML is wonderful! Here’s why: My Favorite Things Die-naimcs Buy 2 get 1 50% off

I recently started working in grade school and have several new co-workers! I want to give a few of them something special to celebrate the holidays and let them know how much I appreciate their help everyday. I decided to make one of them a set of Gift Tags. Here's a pic of the whole collection of five:

I used American Craft's Christmas papers for the printed papers, Bazzill paper for several of the tag bases, and "My Favorite Things" felt for most of the die cut images.

The tags were all started in the same basic way-with card stock:

I will use this round tag as an example of how to begin creating your own set of tags.

Step 1: Choose a die from your dies on hand or grab a new die from the AWDML website. Choose a base color of cardstock to use too and cut out the base shape. I like adding texture too-so I also embossed my die cut piece of cardstock with a Cuttlebug embossing folder. Ink the edges of the die cut piece with silver or gold for sparkle.

Step 2: Die cut some warm fuzzy felt! I used a blue piece of felt from My Favorite Things pack of felt I purchased online from the AWDML store. I used a Spellbinder die, an Accucut die, and a Sizzix die and my Vagabond machine to cut the felt.

Step 3: Adhere the blue felt to the black base (I used glue dots). Layer another die cut piece on top of the larger felt die cut piece. Add a button (or similar bobble) to the top of the layers.

Step 4: Add color to felt piece that aren't the color you want them to be. I inked the white and blue felt with Ranger distress ink. Tie a knot out of twine and adhere to the button top. Place a grommet in the top of the tag & run matching twine to the grommet hole to complete the tag.

Step 5: Felt can be stamped on! I used a rubber acrylic stamp and Ranger Adirondack stamp pad on this tag's tree image stamped on white felt.

I used atyou Spica Glitter pens to add a touch of color and shading to the tree.

Be sure to add a bit of ribbon or a bow to each tag you create!

Step 6: Change the color of the felt to match your patterned paper! I used Tattered Angel's Glimmer Mist to change the white felt snowman to a grey/blue/silver snowman to match the paper. This snowman was cut with a Sizzix die. I used Ranger Stickles in the snowflake centers, pink & black gingham ribbon, black and white twine to add interest and dimension to the tag.

Remember to add dimension by embossing the card base, inking the felt just as you would paper, and use twine and ribbon to each tag!

I used Maya Road chipboard, a brown paper bag with black print, a Prima flower all altered with Glimmer mists. I tied the layered Maya Road pennant and used Distress Ink on the edges of the patterned paper.

I used a screen to create a background pattern with the Glimmer Mist on this Bazzill cardstock. Again, I used a brown paper bag die cut and misted for the flower and Maya Road chipboard snowflake all altered with the glimmer mist.

Glimmer Mist was used on white die cut crinoline, white silk seam binding bow, Maya Road chipboard snowflake, and brown paper bag die cut flower to create the adornment in the upper left corner.

Prima adhesive backed canvas, Prima flowers, white silk seam binding bow, Maya Road chipboard snowflake, and brown paper bag die cut flower were all altered with Glimmer Mist on this card front.

Each of the cards in this set have an inside pocket perfect for tucking in the family Christmas letter, a gift card, or additional greetings. The insides of some of the cards also were altered with the Glimmer Mist.

One of the great thinks I loved about this paper line from Simple Stories is the muted colors and themes of each printed paper. I felt that many of the papers could be used for boys or girls depending on the matching embellishments.

Start a New Holiday Tradition!

Start a new Holiday Tradition: Celebrate St. Nicholas Day! Did you know that the tradition of hanging up stockings at Christmas time originated with Saint Nicholas? Legend has it that Saint Nicholas was known to throw small bags of gold coins into the open windows of poor homes. One of those bags of gold landed in a child's stocking and soon news of the event got around. St. Nicholas was from Greece and December 6th commemorates his life. He gave up his belongings and gave to the needy especially children. Modern times have changed things a bit: I attended a small private college in Wisconsin and there it was a tradition to put your shoes in the hallway (I lived in the dorm) on December 6 to see if St. Nick would visit-sometimes we would be given candy in our shoes. I thought it might be fun to start this tradition with my children this year (plus their Halloween candy buzz is almost worn off). I created some fun candy treats to tuck in their boots & shoes. The long candy tubes will look enticing and fun sticking out of their boots I think! I might even tuck one in my husband's lunch tote.

I used several dies to cut out toppers for the candy packages, BoBunny Christmas Papers, and Maya Road chipboard snowflakes colored with Ranger distress inks and Colorbox cat eye inks.

Stickles glitter on embossed images really make them sparkle!

I wanted to take this opportunity to pay tribute my grandma who passed recently just a few days before her 96th birthday! She really hated having her picture taken in her later years; so I don't have very many of them and she managed to look away or make very strange faces in the few pictures of her that I do have. I was challenged with the task of trying to capture her spirit in a different way. I choose to remember grandma with a fall flower from my garden. Grandma loved her flower gardens (especially lillies), making pies for her family (her apple was the best!) and seeing and visiting with family and friends. I will miss her. I've been thinking of how good one of her pies would be for Thanksgiving! This layout embodies her zest for color & nature with a little bit of bling:

Tutorial: Creating acrylic mini-albums

Here are some creative ideas to use when creating acrylic mini-albums: I think acrylic pages in any album create an impressive backdrop for photos. I will be showing you several ways to alter your acrylic album pages so you can start using acrylic pages in your albums too. Ready to get creative?

First, choose a mini-album. I am using Maya Road's Acrylic Coaster album. It's pages measure 2.5x3.5" each so it is quite small. Also, you will want to grab some micro or small glue dots to adhere paper to the pages and items to the pages. Glue pens also work. Your adhesive should be placed in areas that will be covered by embellishments on the "other side" of the page so try to always be thinking ahead.

Second, choose a line of paper. You will need a very small amount of paper for this size of a mini-album so scraps are perfect. I am using BoBunny's Christmas paper line Blitzen. This is a great choice because Bo-Bunny's heavy double sided printed papers have great design elements on both sides of the paper. This is extremely important during the design portion of your album because both sides of the paper will be visible.
Third, choose your pictures. Remember, the pages are extremely tiny so one 4x6 picture may provide you with two pages of layouts.

Also, keep in mind that very small parts of photos may be used to emphasize certain items on your pages. I will show you an example below. I used a circle punch to include the pictures of the tree ornaments. Then I matted them with another circle, adhered them with glue dots and pop dots to add a bit of dimension.
Fourth, decide what order your pictures will be used in the mini-album. What is the story this little album will tell? Your photos don't have to be used chronologically. Because both sides of the pages/papers are visible; the entire album needs to be planned out and designed before you begin any techniques or adding paper or pictures to the pages.
Fifth, begin the actual creation of the mini-album. I love adding "snow" and "frost" to acrylic pages because the acrylic page naturally gives the viewer a feeling of ice or liquid. Here's how to give the look of snow: add Ranger's Adirondack Dabber in Snow Cap acrylic paint around the outer edges of the page. Allow to dry or use a heat tool to quicken the process.

On the second page of the book create the look of frozen metal or "frost" by adding Ranger Adirondack Metallics Silver Dabber paint around the outer edges of the page. Again allow the page to dry or use a heat tool to quicken the process.

Next use a tiny word stamp on a die cut or punch label and adhere to the front of the second page. Also, use a snowflake punch (mine is from EK Success) and punch a few snowflakes (hearts would be great too) to place in the upper left corner of the page. Use another small lable punch to add a second seasonal word to the paper you'll be adhering to the back of page 2. Using micro-glue dots adhere the paper to the backside of page 2. Check for paper placement through the acrylic page before adhering.
I applied a sheet of paper to the backside of page two. This can be seen all the way through the front of the album. I think it sort of looks like I am peering through several layers of ice. I added a Maya Road chipboard snowflake (stained and glittered of course) along with a brown Maya Road flower in the center. These first two pages work together to create a snowy, frosty look setting the tone for the chilly holiday mini-album.

Sixth, continue working through your mini-album continually keeping in mind that you need to check the pages's fronts and backs before adhering anything to see what the view is through the acylic. On the fourth piece of acrylic I used alcohol inks to color the page green. I used Rangers Adirondack Earthtones in Lettuce on a piece of felt attached to a blending tool. I used a heat tool to dry the alcohol ink.

Seventh, the fifth page of the album I distressed using a sanding tool and then inks with Ranger Distress Festive Berries red ink. This effect is very suddle. (It's the left page pictured below). I used a Maya Road chipboard stocking colored with Tattered Angels glimmer mist as a journaling block.
Eighth, the sixth page of the album I stamped using a Just Rite Holiday stamp and StazOn Solvent ink in Jet Black (StazOn ink works great on acylic surfaces!). I stamped on the backside of the last page and adhered the paper to the front side of the page allowing the final "Happy Holidays" greeting to be seen through the acylic.

Have fun creating with acrylic! Hopefully, some of these ideas have inspired you to create something with acylic.

Showing some Family Pride with a little help from Reminisce

Create adorable jungle animal themed layouts using Reminisce's new line of papers/stickers titled "Family Pride". Our family's last trip to the zoo was a while ago now, but these adorable animal stickers from Reminisce reminded me I still needed to scrapbook a few memories. Our family trip to the zoo in Madison, WI. Leaf stickers used as photo corners, green "back-side" used for grassy fringe along right side of layout.

I also created a fun-loving birthday card using a new die I picked up at The Scrapbooking Studio in Moline, IL and Reminisce's Family Pride papers. I love the fluffiness of the flower.

Challenge-Use a Rub-On on your next layout or card design

Creating Altered Chipboard and Wooden pieces

Step 1: Select several pieces for your project. I am using Maya Road's chipboard and wooden snowflake pieces.

Step 2: Add color to the pieces using Tattered Angel's glimmer mist (Santa Baby), Distress Ink (Peeled Paint), and/or Rangers Paint Daubers (Snow Cap), or Clearsnap cat eye ink pads.

Step 3: Use a heat tool to set the ink/paint onto the pieces.

Step 4: Add glitter to a few of the pieces by running them upside down (good side down)through a Xyron.

Step 5: Sprinkle glitter over the sticky painted side of the pieces.

Step 6: Use glue dots to adhere chipboard or wooden pieces to your layout, card or art project...

I used BoBunny's Blitzen line of papers to create this layout along with my wooden and chipboard pieces I altered.

Technique Using Ranger Perfect Medium and Perfect Pearls

Create gorgeous stamped images with Ranger's Perfect Medium and Perfect Pearls. I created this card using Jillibean Soup's Gazpacho Soup, Accucut die cut card base (Bazzill cardstock), Perfect Medium, stamps, and Perfect pearls in two different colors.

Perfect Pearls in two different colors!

Begin by die cutting a card base with an Accucut die cutting machine (or similar die machine). Adhere Jillibean soup Gazpacho soup papers to inside base. Use Ranger Distress ink and blending tool around scalloped edges of the card front. Cut striped paper for card top using the Tim Holtz distress tool around the paper's edge, ink if desired. Use stamps on Ranger Perfect Medium ink pad and stamp on brown cardstock (the Perfect Pearls really shines through when used on darker cardstock colors). Use fluffy Perfect Pearls brush to apply Perfect Pearls in first color (spider is Kiwi). Stamp second image and use second Perfect Pearls to dust over the second image (floral is Blush). Adhere stamped image to card front. Use Ranger Liquid Pearls in four courners of cardstock to "anchor" the image to card front. Also, I used a silver metalic pen to outline the cardstock just a bit. Finally, add a Jillibean "Soup Label" for the card's greeting.

Week 1 Card Sketch revealed: And here's my take on it: I used black cardstock for the base, Canvas Corp kraft printed cardstock for the printed paper and the greeting. Used an EK Success corner punch and Queen & Co. bling along with May Arts wide gingham ribbon in cream/peach.

I love the simple elegance this sketch offers. Pretty and grown-up at the same time.

Slick Writers by American Crafts
The Slick Writer is a pen "must-have" in my opinion because it allows scrapbookers and cardmakers to write on surfaces that would otherwise go unused and less embellished. Slick Writers contain quick-dry ink and their durable acrylic tip makes this the ideal marker for writing on lots & lots of surfaces, including photos, stickers, ribbon, vellum, metal and glass. I was introduced to the Slick Writer several years ago when I was whining to a friend about not being able to find a pen to write on Maya Road plastic journaling tags. Well, with Slick Writer's you can! They also work great on photo paper (which is what I used in my card example here). Sometimes I find myself wanting to add a bit of journaling to a picture-especially in an area of the photo that is blank-maybe an inspirational word-like "Hope" or "Love". I pull out my Slick Write and it works great. Slick Writers come in lots of different sizes-fine, medium, and broad and are also available in different colors. I created my card using American Crafts patterned paper, photo paper, Ranger alcohol inks, stencils, bling and green gingham ribbon & of course a fine black Slick Writer!

Another Challenge from A Walk Down Memory Lane

I love a good challenge-especially one that helps me reach outside of my comfort zone without being too painful. I have a bad habit of hoarding certain very pretty scrapbooking embellishments...so my challenge to you is to pick something from your "hoard" and use it on a layout today. I choose to use an embroidered tag from Prima that I purchased over a year ago. I also used some Kraft Glassine paper from Tim Holtz idea-ology (Advantus), and some vine ribbon. I cut the tag into two portions to make it go a little further, used the Glassine paper to die cut a flower (Accucut) and my title. The vine ribbon I've had for a while and am now down to only two feet or so-the remainder gets stashed back in the hoard for later :). Here's a look at my layout using the three items from my "hoard".

My first take on the sketch did indeed include a cupcake, I also was able to work in using my crimper and Copic markers for some of the frosting; however, the card just didn't look right to me when I was finished so I started over. I used a whole new color scheme, turned the sketch sideways and used stars instead of the cupcake. These changes to my original sample worked better for me and I was much happier with the results second time around. It's a fun sketch and I liked the idea of the really large flower as the card mat.

And here's my take on it. I substituted a die for scallop type square for the circles. I had fun with the star instead of the flowers on the four corners and then tied that in with punched star shapes. Pop dots give the numbers a bit of dimension.

Sassy Lil' Sketches-Week 1 Layout (August)

Loved this awesome layout sketch from Sassy Lil' Sketches so I had to try it out!

I received my August samples from The Scrapbooking Studio (my favorite LSS!) in Moline, IL and used the Cosmo Cricket 6x6 pad (perfect for this type of layout) to create this 12x12 page layout. I really love the grid! I used a white pen to create the faux stiches, Bella Blvd. 12x12 sheet of letters for the title and journaling (this saved so much time!!), Accucut dies for the butterflies and pennant, and Tim Holtz die for the small journaling piece at the top. Mark and I celebrated our fifteen wedding anniversary in Galena, IL. This layout worked great as an opportunity to have several photos on one page.

And here's my take on it using Crate paper, twine from Twinery, Queen black pearl bling, white opaque pen and black pen for faux stitching, Maya Road small wood buttons and small chipbard flowers, Prima glass glob, Cat eye ink pads to color the chipboard pieces, Pebbles rub-on for the greeting.

I used a large plastic lid as my circle stencil for drawing the "sewn" circles.

I pressed the chipboard down into my cat eye inks to coat the little flowers. Thanks for taking a peak!

Glittery Inspiration...

I love this picture of Julianne and Charlie discovering the ocean at Cocoa Beach, FL for the very first time. It was an awesome trip with lots of "firsts". We saw our first surfer who was on his board just to their left and besides him and us it was pretty empty. It was so cold and windy we were truly the only ones around and we were able to savor the beauty alone.

We had the opportunity to visit a lot of places on our trip: Disney, Universal, the Space Center but the only place they wanted a second chance at visiting was the ocean. :)

I also created a card using the Best Creation glitter papers. It's sort of fun because it "grows" like the plants on the paper. Check it out...

I find that using sketches removes a lot of the pain from the decision process and really helps speed up the creative flow. Reminisce Sneak Peek #4 "Dear Santa" -my personal favorite :)

This little guy from the Reminisce "Dear Santa" line is so cute I just want to pinch his cheeks! Distress tool used on the edges, a template & glimmer mist created the background, Maya Road wooden buttons died to match the background...
Love the border Reminisce is famous for adding to the tops of their 12x12 papers & frequently on sticker sheets. I wraped a border around the wooden Maya Road spool and put it on a stick pin (also Maya Road), the flower is an Accucut die, and the lower edge of the decorative border on the front was created using a Martha Stewart punch.

Don't even think of throwing a snowball at me young man!

Ribbon died with Ranger reinkers, Reminsice papers were dry embossed using a Cuttlebug folder.

The Santa face in the border strip reminds me of wrapping paper my mother used to use when we were kids. She must have bought about five miles of it because she had it FOREVER!!

This little card has a mix of Reminsice Christmas paper from several years past plus their newest Dear Santa, I dusted off a few older QuiKutz dies for the flourishes and used a corner punch to create the green corner flourishes, and a gold pen for the faux stiching.

Embossed and die cut snowflakes and a die cut pennent add some whimsy to these two love birds. I used a bone folder on the backside of a punched star to create dimension, pop-dotted the matted skaters to add emphasis to the photo.

Quantities are limited so don't hesitate. I am showing the card kits here; but there are also layout kits available. These kits are priced to sell! June's kit includes cards appropriate for wedding, anniversaries, thinking of you, and more! All pieces are precut and stamped for you. All you will need to complete these kits are adhesive and cat eye inks.

There are also a few MAY kits left. That doesn't usually happen so you could pick up both kits at once! May's kits have a Mexican theme-and are very unique. Birthday (Feliz Compleanos), Hello (Hola), Thank-You (Gracias), Farewell (Adios), and How's it going? (Que pasa?) are all included in this set of silly Spanish cards. I gave a set to my daughter's teacher (who also teaches Spanish) and she loved them!

Get ready to celebrate your American Heritage with the newest line of papers & stickers from Reminisce. I love their 12x12 sticker sheet containing words, photo corners, borders, journaling tags and more! They've inspired me to create some sparkly cards...

On this card I used the Reminisce glitter paper in blue, silver and a Reminisce Christmas glitter paper for the red, also journaling tag, photo corners, and word stickers from the 12x12 sticker sheet along with some pearl bling in red and blue (of course).

I love pinwheels! Reminisce's double sided papers (the backsides contain famous Washington DC landmarks-perfect for scrapbooking your trip to DC!) worked great to create this pinwheel embelishment held together with a fireworks sticker in the center and a stick pin. I mounted the word sticker onto glitter paper and pop dotted it to the front of the card. I used an Accucut die to create the circle card.

I used Reminisce's stickers, double sided papers, silver glitter paper, and postal twine to create this 11x4.25" card. Accucut dies were used to create the banner pieces.

Reminisce journaling stickers, word stickers, double sided papers, gingham ribbon, Maya Road Bingo piece, Stamping Up star punches, Accucut dies, and Tim Holtz dies were used to create this 5.5x4.25" card on a red Bazzill base.

This final card is actually a party invitation. The border strip around the middle of the card is the "belly band" that holds the flap of the invite in place and also serves as a resting place for the pretty butterfly. Again, Reminisce's sticker sheet saves the day with everything like photo corners, word stickers, and border sticker. I used the Accucut to die cut the butterfly, swirls, and invite.

"In Bloom" Spring Card Class - The Scrapbooking Studio

Reminisce's Spring line of papers/stickers "In Bloom" is front and center during this two hour card class. Each student will create eight Spring cards for birthdays, celebrations, weddings, saying "Hello" and more (Mother's Day cards can be birthday as well). Class begins at 11am-1pm on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at The Scrapbooking Studio located in Moline, IL. (309) 736-7242 (Call to reserve your seat in class or to order a "to go" kit!). Cost is only $18. Techniques include: stamping with glue pads & Pearl Ex, several uses for Tattered Angel's glimmer mist & glimmer glaze, a chance to play with the newest Sizzix Spring embossing dies, set your butterflies free with the Martha Stewart butterfly punch, create a gathered border with Tim Holtz's tissue tape, make things sparkly with bling, Prima flowers, twine, & Prima baubles (love them!), Maya Road wooden buttons (I wonder what we'll do with them?), Canvas Home Basics Mini-Bags, and lots more. Each participant will also receive an entire 12x12 sheet of Reminisce's "In Bloom" border stickers, tags, photo corners, and phrases (you'll have lots of leftovers to create even more cards after class).
